The Arcana continues to awaken.
What They Say:
Princess Nakaba of Senan and Prince Caesar of Belquat only married each other for the sake of peace between their two warring countries, but things take a surprising turn when Caesar finds himself falling for his strange wife! Caesar tries to get Nakaba to return his feelings, but she
maintains that he is her enemy and that she hates him. So when Nakaba has a vision of Caesar getting killed, will she say anything to save him?
The Review!
One morning, Caesar wakes Nakaba up with a special surprise: new clothes that he had made for her. She says she can’t wear them, and he proceeds to tear them up. Loki fixes them up and soothes things over, hurting Caesar’s pride in the process. Meanwhile, the king looks into Nakaba’s past, and learns that she is an illegitimate child that was never made known to the public. In order to make up for the former fiasco, Caesar decides to drag Nakaba into the city. She refuses everything she is offered, and Caesar is baffled as to why she doesn’t seem to want anything. On their way back to the castle, Nakaba spots an injured bird and asks Caesar if she can take him back with them. Caesar agrees, and lets slip that all this time he was simply trying to make Nakaba happy. Shortly after they arrive back, a young Ajin attendant of Nakaba’s named Rito appears, having been sent for her from Senan.
Caesar of course ends up fighting with Rito frequently, and their antics last until one day Nakaba is eating dinner with the royal family. Caesar goes to feed Nakaba some of his food, but Loki knocks it to the ground. Caesar begins to chew Loki out, but Loki picks up the food and eats it, soon coughing up blood and declaring that it was poisoned. When Nakaba goes to sleep that night, she dreams of Caesar’s death, and wakes up in a panic. After she has another dream of her mother’s murder by Belquat soldiers, Loki appears before her and explains that she has the ability to see the past and the future, the power called the Arcana of Time. Her father also possessed that power, and it was for that reason that her parents and her father’s entire race were wiped out.
With the knowledge of her power in hand, she realizes that she had foreseen Caesar’s death and rushes off to save him. Upon arriving at Caesar’s room, she believes that she sees Loki stabbing him to death, but it turns out that he was thwarting another assassination attempt by killing a poisonous snake. Afterwards, Nakaba expresses relief that Loki wasn’t really trying to murder him, to which Loki responds that he does in fact want Caesar dead. Loki asserts that he is planning a revolution of Ajin to overthrow the corrupt royalty, and Nakaba feels torn between her relationship with Loki and her budding love for Caesar.
Later, Nakaba finds herself accused of the attempts on Caesar’s life, but Caesar steps up to defend her. When Nakaba once more foresees trouble for Caesar, she rushes to see him in the garden late at night, only to fall into an abandoned well alongside him. Will Caesar and Nakaba’s relationship take a turn for the worse, or will it end up growing even deeper?
In Summary:
Things continue to make small steps forward in this volume. Nakaba’s mysterious powers are detailed, but at least thus far there’s not very much unexpected shown there, considering how they were foreshadowed. Loki continues to be an interesting character that seems to wear a variety of faces, and Caesar shows his sensitive side more and more as he gets closer to Nakaba. The new character introduced here isn’t terribly interesting in this volume, but there are at least hints that there may be something more going on with him. All in all, this feels like a volume that doesn’t do a whole lot to advance the plot, but still possesses a good bit of the drama and romantic tension that made the first volume interesting.
